After a few hours, we make our way up to Walter’s flat. We arrive and I knock on the door.

“Who is it?” calls a voice from inside the room.

“Some friends of Mr. Johnson,” Bear replies back, he shoots me a What the fuck? look.

The door opens, I see the man inside as he opens the door, his smile turns briefly to confusion, and then to terror as he scans across the group.

“Oh… no…” he mutters as panic overtakes him. He slams the door shut, but I am already stepping through. “HUAAgghhmmff!” I grab him and throw my hand over his mouth, muffling his screams as I push him into the room.

During the game, this played out as a much wilder scene, with Walter running from the room and attempting to crawl out through a high, small bathroom window before being hauled back in by the team.

“Close the drekking door,”  I say. “Walter, Mr. Johnson sent us,” I say after the door is shut. “Is it safe to talk here?”

“Uhh, yeah it’s fine,” he replies, a bit confused. The fact that I am calm seems to calm him.

“Walter, My name is Marius. Do you know why we are here?”

“Yes, you are here to kill me,” he answers, a little fear returning to his voice. “Look, I know nothing I say is going to matter, but it was not my idea. I did not even find out you were not willing participants until we were done. That’s why I wanted to leave this place, I could not stand what we had done.” He was getting more and more desperate sounding “Please don’t kill me, I’ll tell you everything,” he is in full on panic mode again.

I look around at the rest of the team.

“Let him keep talking, lets see where this goes.” Wheeler recommends.

“Uh… Ok, lets hear it.” I say.

“You promise you won’t kill me if I tell you?” he asks.

“Yes, I promise” I lie.

“Ok, I work for Nyx Genetics, in a secret facility only accesable form this arcology. That is the facility where they took you and added the cyberware.” My jaw hit the floor. “But, but we never knew you were taken there against your will, at least I did not. I thought all of our subjects were willing volunteers. It was not until later. that I learned the truth.”

To clarify, Walter recognized the team from his time at Nyx Genetics and their work with bond controlled individuals. When they arrived and he realized who they were, he thought Nyx Genetics had gotten word of his impending break in contract and had sent the team as a hit squad to take him out.

“Ok,” I interrupt. “This is all fascinating, but we need to get you out of here, you can tell us the rest of this on the way.

“On the way where?” Walter inquires.

“We are here to get you out of this arcology, to your new corp.” Cho says.

“We were not sent here to kill you Walter,” I add “We had no idea who you were, just a disgruntled wage-slave who is looking for a way out.”

“Wow, that is some coincidence.” Walter says.

“Yeah, I know.” I lied. “Walter, this next part is quite important. I need to know if you are doing this of your own free will, you are not being forced into this right?”

“No, of course not. So how does this work, can we get out of here now?”

“Yes, we are all going to walk back down to the main level, and then we are going to turn you invisible, and put you on a bus. The whole thing should be pretty uneventful. You are going to have to be careful however not to let anyone bump into you and remain quiet.” I reply back to him. “We will talk once we are alone.”

“Ok, yeah sure. Lets go.” He shoulders a large, but not that full backpack and we are off.

We meet back up with Jade, the driver and board the bus along with a few other travelers. With more people on board, the driver is a little more professional, at least in the sense that he was not engaging in any sex acts while driving. We disembark and Jade speaks softly to the driver for a few minutes. Then the team boards the van with a now visible Walter Tytus.

“Mr. Johnson, this is Marius,” I say after the Johnson answers. “We have your friend, where would you like us to drop him off?”

“I’m sending you an address now,” he says. “See you in 45 minutes.”

About 43.5 minutes later, our van swings into the parking lot of what was once a bustling industrial storage yard, now vacant and neglected. We have learned a lot form our new friend in the intervening minutes. A limousine was waiting. We parked about twenty five away, Wheeler took care to put our van between the limo and the exit and to point our van toward said exit. You never can be to careful, after all. Wheeler left the engine running as Bear, Chekov and I got out with Mr. Tytus. He walked ahead of us and eagerly shook Mr. Johnson’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you in person Mr-”

“WALTER!” Mr. Johnson interrupted him loudly, “It’s nice to meet you too, why don’t you wait in the car and you and I can speak more privately. One of Mr.Johnson’s bodyguards escorted Walter to the car before he could object. The other remained at Mr. Johnson’s side.

“Well, you all have done some fine work today, a victory for the good guys.” He reached into his pocket and produced a paper envelope. He reached inside and removed a certified credstick. “You will please confirm the balance is as expected,” he said as he handed the credstick to Chekov, who had a commlink waiting.

“It’s good,” he said after a few moments.

“Well gentlemen, it has been fun. I’ll keep your number.” He turned and walked back toward his limo. We went back to our van, quite happy that this went as smoothly as it did.
